Dev Blog - First Entry

This Is the first entry in what will be a fort-nightly dev blog where I give the community an inside update on what developments we have made over the last couple of weeks. Instead of our Facebook, where we only really show things when they are completed, this dev blog is intended to keep you guys enlightened about the continued progress of the game in the form of work in progress screenshots, videos and gifs of any of the modelling, texturing, concept art or animation that we are in the process of creating. Naturally as we will be showing lots of WIP screenshots, the items shown will likely be liable to change considerably, so please don’t take them as a finished product. With that being said, let’s begin this opening dev blog!

Texturing

This will likely be one of the most active areas of the dev blog due to the sheer amount of work Matt produces every week. Recently he has been rapidly progressing through the buildings Rafael modelled, but his pace has been so impressive that I’m unable to show any WIP screenshots as he just finished his 9th building. However, I can show you a blurred compilation of the work not yet posted to Facebook all of which will begin to trickle through in the next few weeks.

However what I can show you clearly are some screenshots from when Matt loaded up these completed buildings in engine, giving you guys a small indication of the attention to detail and quality that will exist throughout the village.

Modelling

Unfortunately, the creation of real modelling content has slowed a bit due to Rafael needing to focus on his personal life, but still has continued to work with Matt in polishing up each of the 50+ buildings he has produced thus far so they are ready for texturing.

Concept Art

With this section it is time to more formally introduce a new member of our team, Daniel or Dati, who has quickly settled in and produced lots of top notch designs at a quick pace. With his great sketching ability, he was put onto designing some more buildings and village props to populate our village with, as shown below. In regards to myself, I have been sliding into more of an Art Director role whilst working with Dati on design and Matt with texturing, but I am working on getting back into concepting myself, starting with the hidden snow environment design, for which I have done 9 very quick thumbnail sketches to be refined to 3 digital ones, then 1 final concept. The thumbnail sketches can also be seen below.

Jutsu Creation

Vreg has been going through the early stages in concepting out how the earth jutsu will look. This initial process involved going into an animation software in order to create a number of quick animations fitting with the idea of a earth dome to be used mostly for defence in warding off jutsu attacks ,or, if the user has the required skills, offense through trapping the opponent in the dome itself. We thought this jutsu would be beneficial to gameplay as it allows the player to slow down and regain chakra and health in what is an fast paced and deadly environment. Ill show you some of the various animations below, but you will have to wait to see which one we decided to develop. Feel free to comment below on which one is your favourite.

And with that the first dev blog is complete. I hope you have gained a small insight into the development progress we have been making and are happy with our work rate thus far. As I intend for this to be a continued log I will be back in a couple of weeks with yet more developments we have made, from stuff in early WIP states to close to completion. Please comment with any critiques or suggestions you might have for this new format. Until then, sayonara shinobis!

Thanks guys! Gonna be attempting to start an art habit of a 30 min speed paint per day(or every few days) between homework's, so these should start increasing in rate.

P.S. dont worry wont be neglecting my SLO work, just will be confined to weekends as i like to spend a lot more than 30 minutes on fully fledged concepts+ designs, so the period after school is not sufficient :)

Shinobi Life Online Questions / Re: Map
« on: December 23, 2015, 17:59:44 »
Yeah basically that^ we would prefer to release the village in more completed chunks rather than just a couple of buildings scattered on a map that obviously hasn't been designed for them. However that doesn't mean we wont release anything at all until its all 100% completed. What i was thinking would be to release the village in quarter sections, after the base environment (hills trees etc) has been laid out. To illustrate what I'm saying here's some extremely basic building placements i was doing for Raf a couple of months back for what the first quarter might look like

Shinobi Life Online Suggestions / Re: UI Menu's Etc
« on: December 14, 2015, 19:56:55 »
oh dont get me wrong VREG i didnt make this post to sound like a douche bag, or to rip on you guys at all, i think the CORE of the game is amazing, and your doing a fantastic job all in all, but again thats what the "suggestion" forum is for, correct? to point out things that need to be worked on lol. like i said the base of the game you have is amazing, you have the core concept down thats for damn sure, but the MENU thing is a must, thats usually the very first thing EVERY person does when they go into a new game, is bring up the menu to change things around you get what i mean? and the jutsu thing is killer for alot of ppl, you have to think about it this way, if im trying to lets say, level up my guy i want to be able to grab big packs of mobs and tear them down, how can i do that if i have to hit, 1. then 0 3 9 8 etc etc, by the time i get a jutsu off, ill either be dead, or beat up pretty bad you know what i mean?  again not trying to sound like a dick or be over critical, just throwing things out there for you to consider bro, but all in all i think your doing a great job so i hope you dont take it the wrong way at all.

No way are we removing that. We want to create a realistic mmo, as if u were living in the world of shinobi yourself, not some super casual game like most mmo's out there. Through having this feature it means the game has some actual SKILL involved, rather than it being based on grinding to gain levels. If a player is actually skilled, then he can beat a jonin with a genin level player using movement/jutsu speed something which is impossible to achieve if the skill of the game is spamming a 'jutsu button'.

22
Yeah im drafting up 2 new concepts based on vregs+joca's+dragons ideas.....maybe we can do a poll later asking which version you like best.

23
Nice points Joca (and dragon too, but this post is about Joca's post :P) I do agree about Turkish architecture not fitting into SLO's world. And a village inside a mountain hmmmm.... Good idea, I like it, but doesn't this give them extra protection? They are more fortified than other villages, kind of unfair, no? It might also mean that there would actually be no snow inside the village hahahahahaha. I propose this:

When you step onto the land of hidden snow, all you see is ice and snow, but if you know the way, then you can find THE cave which leads to the Hidden Snow, covered by walls of ice not so high, but high enough to hide it from onlookers, so that they only see a wall of ice with a cave far away, barely see able because of the snow storm that is always on going.

How'd you like it? :P feel free to point out and mistakes and give your opinion on this! ^-^

I think theres a bit of a problem with that, but not from a 'coolness' standpoint, more from a gameplay point of view. This is because firstly hidden snow is gonna be a selectable hidden village, so there are naturally gonna be hundreds of players entering and leaving the village every day, which will take away from the mystery, aswell as the fact people going on missions to hidden snow wont want to do a mission to find one of the major villages- we need to make gameplay objectives relatively obvious otherwise the player gets bored and moves on. By all means we can make it 'hard' to see through snowstorms and such, but for secretive villages like you are suggesting i think we should focus on making hidden water the village that everyone is vying to find.

24
I dont think Turkish architecture fits it, for first, it looks cramped, and doesnt  give the feel of ninja village, ore like some proud nation village for everyone to see, doesnt give the feeling of Hidden Village, and Turkish architecture doesnt fit northern climate, its more for south climate and just doesnt fit in Shinobi world, id put a village inside a snowy mountain or somewhere Hidden, with a bit of Jap based architecture, but also made up architecture, id use Siberia and Alaska as inspirations(middle age). But thats just my long long long opinion :)
Yeah Turkish buildings don't really fit in the SLO universe.

Good points joca and message received vreg xD......Revamping all the buildings to have a more Japanese centered design :)
Also yeah i was never happy about how cramped it looked, something this revamp gives me a chance to fix

Personally prefer his Roid-Mane and Wyvern pics the best.

Wyvern?xD

And thanks everyone for the lovely feedback, really inspires me to keep doing these :)
@Vreg the dragon was drawn+textured with refs.

26
Really appreciate the feedback guys, thanks to your help I now know where i can modify this concept, and which design route to go for future village concepts. For the snow village in particular, im going to take the advice given and remove the Eskimo houses for the 'poor' villages and replace them with log cabins as suggested by @Leebz , an idea which seems plausible considering the large pine forest next to the lower village. Thanks again peeps, off to make it happen :)

Lighting study with the subject matter of iron man, took about 45 mins

What graphics tablet do you use if you use one at all?

I use a Wacom Bamboo, everyone's favorite cheap tablet + Photoshop as the program to draw.

Oh, and i decided to edit the portrait to make it look more like the traditional iron man rather than the first one, which was done without reference so i was kind of designing as i went :)

Also did another landscape speedie, took around 25 mins but not totally happy with it

So after doing the hidden snow comp(shown below) my teammates commented that it might not fit the style of the game as the architecture style is obviously not Japanese(Eskimo and Turkish style cultures were the main inspirations). This was done mainly as Japanese style buildings are not meant for constant snowfall, so i thought a culture that had spent centuries living in this climate would be more suited for this village(eskimos) and that the Turkish architecture is so majestic and extravagant that it would fit with the backstory i was creating(strong rich-poor divide). However we are making this game for you, the community, so this is your chance to way in. Do you want exclusively Asian architecture? Or are you fine with some more artistic freedom in regards to culture? Comment wit your thoughts and vote in the poll.
