Clan History
The cold snow is no place for children. Two brothers, scarcely old enough to walk proficiently, found themselves near a frozen river. Their supplies were scant -- clothing barely adequate to survive the chilling nights and their food had lasted only several days. Young children like these had no understanding of survival; they could not hunt and could not ration their food properly. Without nourishment, Migi and Hidari ate what they could find: snow, grass, and twigs.
As they laid on their deathbed, starvation, malnourishment, and frostbite threatening to overcome them, one curious wolf happened upon their lair. This arctic beast, fur white as snow, felt strongly towards the twins. Her pups had not survived the fierce winter -- this was her second chance as a mother. Her new ‘pups’ suckled from her teat and ate the scarce meat she was able to procure. Slowly, they began to recover; eventually enough to return to movement.
By the time Migi and Hidari had been nursed back to health, spring had come into full bloom. The river had begun to thaw and animals abandoned their winter hideouts. Ample prey and accessible water allowed the brothers to thrive. Soon, they neared their guardian’s size.
Many winters passed -- as they grew in size and strength, the arctic wolf neared its natural lifespan. However, that is not how she would go. As Migi and Hidari ventured out into the wilderness, they pushed nearer and nearer to the closest village. Their curiosity of the great unknown gripped them tightly, eventually bringing the twins into contact with humans.
Their feral behavior did not bode well with the villagers. They had no knowledge of language, etiquette or decent human behavior. The inventions of civilized humans interested Hidari -- the taste of simplicities like bread attracted him. As he spent more time around the village, concerns were raised among the population. They would have no more of it; the next time those beast-twins showed their barbaric faces, an execution would take place.
That was not good enough for one fellow. He took it upon himself to hunt Migi and Hidari -- yet he found something more vicious instead. Ikku, as Migi had taken to calling their guardian, attacked first. The arctic wolf had aged, however, and was in no condition to fight. Ikku was stuck with three arrows before she fell to the ground, yet her killer could not bring himself to take the life of a human.
He brought Migi and Hidari into his home, treating them as equals to his own children; yet, they could not be of his family -- they were savages. To save face among the villagers, he gave them the surname Kottatsuki. The twins learned the basics of writing and arithmetic, however, in due time their adoptive father would be confronted by village elders, demanding he turn over the feral beings.
Around the age of eleven, Migi and Hidari Kottatsuki were left to their own devices again. They were sent away before their persecutors could take hold of them. Hidari would not forget the hospitality he was shown by the man and would occasionally leave surplus animals he hunted on the doorstep of their old caretaker. Migi, however, harbored feelings of resentment -- Ikku was his mother and that man had killed her.
Eventually, this conflict came to a point as the twins argued over which bank of the river to construct their cabin on. Hidari argued for the eastern bank. It was closer to the village and wouldn’t require them to cross should they need to visit the village. Migi wanted nothing to do with the village, therefore arguing for the west bank; which had more trees nearby. No compromise could be met, and the two eventually began building their own cabin on either side.
Hidari struggled to erect his cabin due to the trees having been cut down for the nearby village. Migi completed his shelter days before his brother, and began to tease him over his senseless determination. As Hidari finally completed his cabin, Migi crossed the river to see it for himself. He mocked it for its shoddy construction and mediocre design. This continued for several days.
The fourth day, Migi crossed the river again. Waiting on the other side was Hidari, who would no longer be ridiculed by his brother. An unexpected hit to the head with a rock knocked Migi out. Hidari, assuming he had died, threw him into the river. Migi drowned before he came to.
Slowly, vagrants and drifters settled in near Hidari’s cabin. They had formed a small village with a population of a few hundred when the issue of living space came into consideration. Hidari’s hamlet grew into proximity of the village he had previously lived in. He never forgot the debt owed to the man, a member of the Nakai clan, who sheltered he and his brother. When the two settlements came directly into conflict, it was Hidari and the Nakai member who had risen to prominence with their respective population. War was averted, and the two villages merged into one, forming what would become the Village Hidden by Snow.
Several generations had not washed away the bond between the Kottatsuki and the Nakai. As the first Yukikage was inaugurated, the current head of the Kottatsuki, Yasai, swore absolute allegiance to the Kage in memory of his ancestor’s similar loyalty.
