I learned the basics from a tutorial, I'll link it:
http://webdesign.tutsplus.com/tutorials/web-design-for-kids-welcome-to-tuts-town--cms-23680
I know it's for kids, but it's great for anyone trying to learn to code from scratch :) @Nova

It doesn't matter if its for kids, it's great to learn.
I was just wondering if you used codecademy ;p http://www.codecademy.com/learn

Codecademy is great.

@shakira looks familiar to you?
HTML and PHP and all that code.
-
I don't even know who shakira is xD and It's HTML and CSS @Reminance
-
@Shivraj i can clearly see that its CSS as you just stated.
But i was talking to shakira about him coding in php.
This was not directed towards you.
Also goodluck with your journey ^^
-
I only hope you will make each step until you will get closer and closer to the knotted point where you will find the true despair that waits deep within, just beneath this beautiful face of programming that you see now.
Good luck!

http://www.vikingcodeschool.com/posts/why-learning-to-code-is-so-damn-hard @Konohuro
I see :P @Reminance
And this won't be updated much till the end of September, exams :P
-
How much time have you spent searching for that thing that is too long and atm I am too lazy to read about someone else's experience?
-
Jcryer linked it to me on skype a long time ago, I liked it and bookmarked it :P, basically tells you about the phases of the journey to learn to code, I'm at the "Hand-Holding Honeymoon" phase right now lol, the first and easiest phase.
-
What program did you use to write the code? I want to try it, thanks!

https://code.visualstudio.com/
it's from Microsoft, really neat :) although, there are better editors for HTML than that, but that supports lots of languages.

I've been using Brackets at my school, you might want to check that out.
I quite like it.
Link to Brackets. (http://brackets.io/)

I am using Atom atm but I will give it a shot. Thanks!

Codecademy is great.
I know this post is extremely old, but.. let's be serious.. CodeAcademy only seems great. I mean, maybe on the HTML and CSS side they did a great job, but on PHP and MYSQL they didn't learn me anything (and yes, I've read all those outrageously-big walls of useless text)
I mean, I thought I knew so much after finishing all those hours-long tutorials, and was about to start a project. Guess what, didn't even know how to connect my website to a database using php... pretty lame. I recommend W3SCHOOLS.
I started working on a social network using php and mySQL, I don't have big plans with it, just want to test my knoweledge...
-
that's a good point, as I moved on further with programming I also started using W3SCHOOLS.
Another website I have been using recently is -Removed link-
This is not a coding site but that is besides the point

And for this reason folks, Mars will forever remain the King of the forum. Please, give him all your reps.

The one im using is SoloLearn. There are classes for every language you can think of and it is not just wright this code it worked good job. They actually explain why the code works and quiz you on your understanding of it. There is a community there as well with programming challenges to help you test what you know.
-
Github is a good place to learn. Not only do you have open source projects but there's also plenty of tutorial repositories.
In terms of text editors I'd suggest sublime text and for an IDE atom is great.

i use sololearn too
