Title: First Person(The right way)
Post by: The Seanson on July 01, 2014, 00:31:38
Saw this thread http://www.shinobilifeonline.com/index.php/topic,59.0.html and I saw it got locked so I couldn't put my two cents in.
Also, sorry if I'm breaking any rules by creating this thread, I'm actually not too sure why it wasn't originally posted in the suggestions to begin with.

First person in almost any game except shooters is usually terrible and painful to use.  The only game I have ever played and used first person is Arma.  What makes Arma different is how they actually made their first person.  Instead of placing the camera somewhere in your neck and drawing a GUI, they actually put the camera directly in the models eyes, and stop there.  In Arma, you see what everyone else sees.
Arma also adds a touch of realism by letting you look around.  If you hold alt and move your mouse, your head moves.  You can look down at your chest, feet, and arms.

Third person works in Arma similarly.  Holding alt and moving your mouse allows you to move your head and look around while in third person.

Implementing a first and third person camera would be on the easier than most of the other things needed to complete this game, but it would be nice and having a realistic 1st person mode in an MMO would be a game changer.

I'm thinking of linking the camera completely to the character's looking direction. Looking up for example, would make your character look up. And I'm talking about whole body realistic looking, not just tilting of the head. Controlling the direction of movement with your mouse with this system would make your character look in that direction first before moving, which should result in realistic movement.

First person would be perfect for this, as it would be a very easy implementation, while maintaining a realistic first person experience. Realism is one of Shinobi Life Online's largest pillars. This would also allow you to easily control the direction of jutsu. And finally, we wouldn't need special animations for stuff like running left/right.

One big contra to this system is the additional 120 bytes of data / second for each character in the network pipeline. This means an additional 300 kilobytes / second for 50 people standing near each other.

That sounds like a good idea, and I have 2 secondary suggestion to that.
Since being a ninja requires you to be aware of your surroundings, maybe adding two hot keys to move your head only or your eyes only would be beneficial.
Also,  a third person option or an abundance of mirrors and reflective waters would be nice because I'd like to see my character every now and then.

I /really/ like this idea, not only because it's realistic, but mainly because it's first person. The point of someone jumping behind you and killing you easily was brought up in another thread, BUT that's life, that's realistic. If you're foolish enough to never check behind you, something they do in Naruto, or you can't listen (rebuttal to the listen part: Ninjas ganna be ninjas and they'll be 9/10 times silent), then you should be dead. Humans are human, and that means we have peripheral vision, meaning our field of view is limited.

My impression was that the creators/developers want this game realistic, and that means no 3rd person. (Meant in no disrespect or offense, just in case it was taken that way. I simply meant that I thought, from all the information, the game will be realistic and that means that first person is the only way to go.) If you think about it, no third person doesn't really damage the game or gameplay. If you guys, the developers, do create a great first person, which I am sure you can!, then a third person won't be needed and the game will remain realistic! Haza!

Oo I forgot to ask something. This means there will be no 3rd person?

It'd be sad to have only 1st person... takes away the fun and kinda defeats the purpose of having dynamic battle animations or character customization. I soooo hope this isn't true

I agree with 1st person, I like the idea that you can't magicly see people behind you. So why not make the people who want to see there ninja happy by a 3rd person inventory system. YOu can open it up and you will see a 3d model of your character on the side. This makes both sides happy, realistic battles and being able to see your Shinobi

That would make noone happy. Can we please have this topic locked? He already said 3rd camera is the main playstyle so deal with it. 1st camera fans will just come and hate on 3rd person
